As a junior in a computer science program, this does not feel abstract to me. I am trying to become the kind of person who can build useful software, keep learning across the wider landscape of IT, and think critically about the tools shaping the field I am entering. The more I watch how AI is being used in work and education, the more convinced I become that the future will reward people who are genuinely well-rounded, grounded in strong foundations, and able to tell the difference between assistance and understanding.
That is also why I care so much about computer education. If the AI era pushes schools toward weaker habits, shallower learning, and polished output without real comprehension, then we will be doing a disservice to the next generation of computer scientists. We will be graduating people who can produce something quickly but cannot explain it, defend it, secure it, or fix it. That would be a serious failure.

We also need to ask what education should look like if we want students to graduate as thinkers rather than operators of interfaces.

There are people losing trust in what they read, hear, and see because synthetic content is becoming harder to spot. There are workers being evaluated against unrealistic productivity expectations because managers imagine AI can close all skill gaps instantly. There are students being tempted into dependency before they have built the habits that make real understanding possible. There are small organizations buying magical promises that do not match reality, wasting money and making bad decisions based on hype.
The educational side worries me especially. If students begin using AI as a substitute for learning rather than a tool that sits on top of learning, then we are training dependency into the system. A student who cannot reason through a problem, trace a bug, explain a concept, or defend a design decision is not being helped by producing clean-looking output more quickly. The important thing is that these benefits become real only when a human can judge the output. A capable person can use AI to move faster because they can evaluate, modify, reject, or refine what they receive. A less capable person is more likely to mistake confidence for correctness. That is why even the strongest AI success stories usually point back to the same conclusion: the tool is most powerful in the hands of someone who already has a base of knowledge and discipline.
This matters for small business too. AI really can lower the cost of trying things. It can help founders write early marketing drafts, prototype workflows, document processes, analyze patterns in customer feedback, or reduce the load of repetitive administrative work. That can be a huge advantage. But again, none of that removes the need for sound technical and strategic thinking. It just changes where leverage comes from. In programming, that might mean using AI to generate a rough starting point, compare approaches, summarize documentation, or surface possible test cases, while still doing the real reasoning yourself. In writing, it might mean using it to brainstorm, restructure, or tighten language after the ideas are already yours. In business, it might mean using it for repetitive support tasks, documentation, or early-stage process automation where a human still owns the decisions.
The pattern here is important: good use usually extends human capability instead of replacing human responsibility. The tool reduces friction, but the person still carries the judgment. That is the difference between assistance and surrender. Once that distinction gets blurry, the quality of the work usually drops even if the volume goes up.
The Lazy Debate Is Making Everyone Dumber
A lot of public conversation about AI feels trapped between two bad instincts. The first says that AI is the future, resistance is pointless, and everyone should simply adapt faster. The second says AI is hollow, corrupting, and should be rejected outright. Both positions are attractive because they reduce complexity. Both positions are also too simple. Reality is harder. AI is useful and dangerous. It is overhyped and genuinely transformative. It lowers some kinds of effort while increasing the importance of others. It creates opportunities and failure modes at the same time.
The problem with a polarized debate is that it discourages the kind of practical reasoning people actually need. If every conversation becomes ideological, then people stop asking grounded questions. What tasks is this tool good at? What kinds of mistakes does it make repeatedly? What level of knowledge does a person need before trusting it? How does this change hiring, education, and team composition? What does it mean for students? What does it mean for smaller businesses? Those are more useful questions than choosing a side in a cultural performance.
For technical people, especially students, the danger of polarization is that it can turn education into theater. One student starts leaning on AI for everything and calls it efficiency. Another rejects it entirely and calls that integrity. Both might be avoiding the harder work of figuring out when and how to use tools responsibly. The real goal is not purity. It is maturity. We need the ability to use tools without surrendering judgment to them.
This is one reason I want my own work and writing to stay grounded in nuance. I do not want to become the kind of person who mistakes a strong opinion for a finished thought. Technology is too important for that. If AI is changing the conditions of education, work, and trust, then we owe the subject more than slogans.
Why Foundations Matter Even More Now

Programming Is Still About Thinking

But when something fails in a non-obvious way, the person who progresses is usually the one who can reason carefully through the system. They can isolate variables, reproduce the issue, test assumptions, and interpret the evidence. That is not glamorous, but it is one of the clearest demonstrations of real competence. It requires patience, logic, and a willingness to think instead of just react.
There is also a deeper habit here that matters beyond code itself. Learning to program well trains a kind of disciplined thinking. You learn that precision matters. You learn that ambiguity has costs. You learn that what seems obvious in your head may fall apart under execution. You learn that systems often fail in boring ways before they fail in impressive ways. Those lessons shape how you approach problems in general. They are part of why I think strong computer education still matters even if the surface tools become much more powerful.
If we let students skip the thinking and go straight to the product, we are not just weakening their programming ability. We are weakening one of the most valuable forms of mental discipline that technical education can offer.
Hardware, Systems, and Theory Still Matter
I also think the future belongs to people who understand that technology is bigger than one layer of abstraction. Software does not float in the air. It runs on machines, across networks, through operating systems, on top of protocols, inside security assumptions, under business constraints, and within the realities of cost and maintenance. If AI lowers the barrier to producing code, then people who understand the broader stack will stand out even more.
This is part of why I am interested in becoming more well-rounded across IT. Hardware matters. Systems thinking matters. Security matters. Logic and theory matter. Networking matters. If a small business needs help, it usually does not need a person who only understands one glamorous layer of the problem. It needs someone who can see how the parts connect, who can troubleshoot across boundaries, and who can think practically instead of idealistically.
Theory matters here too. People sometimes treat theory as something separate from real work, but theory is often what allows you to generalize beyond a specific tutorial or framework. It is what lets you reason when the environment changes. If tools and libraries keep shifting, then students who only know surface usage will always be starting over. Students with stronger conceptual models will adapt faster because they can connect new tools to older principles.
The same goes for hardware and lower-level understanding. You do not need to become a specialist in everything, but you do need respect for the layers below you. Performance, reliability, limitations, security, and user experience all become clearer when you stop imagining software as magic. A well-rounded technical person sees systems instead of isolated screens.
Security and Trust Are Going to Matter More, Not Less
If AI makes it easier to build quickly, it also makes it easier to build carelessly. That means security and trust are going to matter even more. Fast output is not the same thing as safe output. A generated solution may work and still contain dangerous assumptions, hidden vulnerabilities, poor validation, or architectural decisions that create long-term risk. People who understand security, access control, data exposure, and responsible design are not becoming less relevant. They are becoming more necessary because speed increases the cost of hidden mistakes.
Trust is not only a technical issue either. It is social and organizational. Users want to know that what they see is credible. Employers want to know that candidates actually understand the work they claim to have done. Clients want to know that the software they are paying for is not just assembled quickly but assembled responsibly. When AI systems make low-effort imitation easier, trust has to be rebuilt through better signals. Real understanding, careful explanation, documented reasoning, and visible process all become stronger differentiators.
This matters for students too. If hiring managers become less certain that polished output reflects real skill, then students need stronger ways of demonstrating substance. Real projects, thoughtful case studies, honest writing, and clear communication become more important because they provide richer evidence than a clean screenshot or a copied answer ever could. In a weird way, this is one reason I think building a project-first site with real ideas around it is so valuable. It creates a fuller signal.
Security, integrity, and trust are often treated like secondary concerns until something breaks. I think that mindset is becoming less viable. The future is going to reward people who care about reliability before failure forces the lesson.
Small Businesses and Startups Will Need Well-Rounded People
Small teams will not just need the best tools. They will need people who know how to use those tools in context.
One of the reasons I care about becoming broad rather than narrow is that AI is likely to make small teams more ambitious. A small business can now attempt workflows, automations, or content operations that used to be out of reach. A startup can move faster with fewer people. That sounds exciting, and it is. But it also means that each person on a small team may need to carry more judgment across more domains. The person who can speak software, systems, security, business realities, and communication will be extremely useful.
This is why I think well-rounded technical people will have a big leg up. The old model of highly isolated specialization will still exist, but many growing organizations will need people who can move between layers. They will need people who can understand the product, the user, the infrastructure, the risk, and the tradeoffs. They will need people who can learn quickly without pretending to know what they do not know. They will need people who can connect tools to outcomes.
AI does not reduce the value of that kind of person. It increases it. The more cheap capability becomes available, the more important it becomes to have people who can coordinate it wisely. A well-rounded technologist can tell when a tool fits the problem, when automation is premature, when a fast solution introduces future risk, and when a seemingly small systems issue is actually the thing that will hurt the business later.
That broader usefulness is part of what I want to grow into. Not someone who knows everything, because no one does, but someone whose understanding travels well across contexts. Someone who can contribute in real environments where problems do not arrive pre-labeled by discipline.
A small business often does not have the luxury of hiring five specialists just because it now has access to AI tools. It may need one person who can help evaluate software choices, understand basic security implications, automate a process responsibly, communicate with non-technical stakeholders, and recognize when a shiny idea is actually going to create maintenance pain. That kind of person becomes incredibly valuable because they reduce risk while still helping the business move.
This is also where breadth becomes a competitive advantage for people early in their careers. If AI lowers the cost of producing raw implementation output, then one of the best ways to stand out is not by pretending to be superhuman, but by being genuinely useful across adjacent domains. Can you debug a system, explain a tradeoff, understand the business need, think about security, and still build? That profile is powerful.
In other words, I do not think the AI era eliminates generalists. I think it creates a stronger market for grounded, capable, technically serious generalists who can connect parts of a business that are usually separated. The small teams that win will probably not just be the ones with access to the best tools. They will be the ones with people who know how to use those tools in context.
AI and Cheating in Education Cannot Be Treated Like a Side Issue
If you use AI to avoid learning, you are not beating the system as much as you are weakening your own future.
Cheating has always existed, but AI changes the scale, the speed, and the texture of it. Students no longer need to copy from one another in the traditional sense to submit work they do not understand. They can generate essays, code, reflections, explanations, and even discussion responses that look polished enough to pass casual inspection. That means the old idea of cheating as something obvious and separate from ordinary work is breaking down.
What worries me is not only rule-breaking in the narrow sense. It is the normalization of intellectual outsourcing before understanding has formed. If a student uses AI to avoid the actual mental work of reading, reasoning, debugging, or writing, the damage is larger than a single dishonest submission. The student is training a habit of escape. They are learning to bypass the exact discomfort that often produces growth. Over time, that can leave them with a transcript that looks stronger than the mind behind it.
There is also a fairness problem here. Students who are trying to learn honestly may start to feel punished by comparison. They spend hours wrestling with a concept while someone else produces a cleaner-looking answer in a fraction of the time. If classrooms are not designed carefully, the honest student can start to feel naive for doing real work. That is a terrible incentive structure. Once honesty starts feeling strategically foolish, educational culture degrades fast.
Teachers are being put in a difficult position too. They may know that some work is not authentic, but proving it consistently can be hard. Overreliance on AI detectors is not a serious answer. Many detectors are unreliable, and false accusations can damage trust badly. But simply pretending the problem does not exist is also not serious. The educational system has to find better ways of designing assignments, discussions, checkpoints, and evaluations so that real understanding is harder to fake.
The conversation also needs to move beyond simplistic moralizing. Students are operating in an environment where AI use is simultaneously condemned, expected, celebrated, and ambiguously permitted depending on the context. That confusion matters. If the rules are unclear, the culture is inconsistent, and the incentives reward polished output above all else, then misuse becomes easier to rationalize. That does not remove responsibility, but it does mean the institutions have responsibilities too.
To me, the right response is not performative panic. It is educational redesign. More process visibility. More staged submissions. More oral explanation. More in-class reasoning. More emphasis on showing how an answer was developed, not just what the final answer looks like. If AI makes cheating smoother, then education has to become more thoughtful about how genuine thinking is observed.
I also think students need to hear something direct: if you use AI to avoid learning, you are not beating the system as much as you are weakening your own future. Maybe you get the grade. Maybe you save time in the short term. But eventually you meet a real problem, a real interview, a real bug, or a real responsibility that cannot be solved by pretending to know more than you do. That is when the bill comes due.
What AI Means for Junior Developers and Early Career Hiring
Another difficult question is what this all means for junior developers. If companies believe AI can now replace some entry-level work, then the pathway into the field becomes more uncertain. Junior roles have traditionally included a lot of implementation, cleanup, repetition, and guided learning through real tasks. If some of that work is automated away, the risk is that companies become less willing to invest in beginners while still expecting senior-level judgment from people who have never been given space to grow into it.
That would be a serious problem, because careers do not start at the senior level. Someone has to be allowed to become experienced. If organizations start expecting AI-assisted speed without also supporting human development, they may damage the pipeline that produces strong engineers in the first place. The people who already know how to think will stay valuable, but the process of creating more such people could get weaker if early career opportunities shrink.
This is one reason I think students need stronger and richer signals now. It is not enough to say you are learning. You have to show how you think. Real projects, thoughtful portfolios, technical writing, honest case studies, and broader literacy all help here. They tell a story that a resume bullet alone cannot tell. In a noisier market, depth of signal matters more.
I also think hiring teams will increasingly care about whether a junior developer can work well with tools without becoming dependent on them. Can they explain generated code? Can they improve it? Can they reason about tradeoffs? Can they debug without collapsing? Can they communicate clearly about what they did and what they do not yet know? Those questions may matter more than the old distinction between writing everything from scratch and using assistance at all.
So while AI may make early career hiring more complicated, it also creates a reason for students to become stronger in ways that go beyond raw output. The juniors who stand out may be the ones who pair technical ability with clarity, breadth, and visible integrity. That is difficult, but it is at least a direction that makes sense.
Education Cannot Drift Into Shortcut Culture
This brings me back to education, because I think education is where the stakes are especially high. If schools quietly drift into shortcut culture, then they may produce graduates who look more productive on paper while being less prepared in reality. Shortcut culture is not just about cheating. It is a broader mindset where the immediate appearance of progress becomes more important than the slower process of building actual competence. AI can accelerate that drift if we are not careful.
A student can now generate code, explanations, summaries, and even reflections with very little effort. If the educational environment is not designed thoughtfully, the line between support and substitution gets blurry quickly. Teachers may struggle to know what a student truly understands. Students may persuade themselves that seeing an answer is equivalent to learning it. Over time, that can hollow out the educational experience. You can earn progress markers while still lacking the habits that make future work possible.
I do not say this to be dramatic. I say it because the foundations of technical thinking really do require struggle, repetition, confusion, correction, and eventually clarity. If every moment of uncertainty is immediately replaced by generated certainty, students may never learn how to sit with hard problems long enough to understand them. That would be a serious loss. Education is not only about producing an answer. It is about becoming the kind of person who can generate good answers under new conditions.
That is why I think educators and students both need to take the current moment seriously. The question is not how to ban every tool. The question is how to preserve the conditions under which real learning still happens. That may require clearer expectations, better assessment design, more emphasis on oral explanation and iterative work, and a renewed insistence on foundations.
I also think schools need to speak more plainly about the difference between assistance and substitution. Students are adults or near-adults. Many of them can handle a serious conversation if institutions are willing to give one. Explain what kinds of use support learning, what kinds of use undermine learning, and why that distinction matters. The more vague the rules are, the easier it becomes for students to convince themselves that anything convenient must also be acceptable.
What Stronger Computer Education Could Look Like
If I imagine a stronger response to the current moment, it starts with being more explicit about what we are trying to teach. We are not only trying to teach syntax, tool usage, or the ability to reproduce familiar patterns. We are trying to teach reasoning, systems awareness, patience, debugging, modeling, and judgment. Once you say that clearly, educational design changes. You start caring less about whether students can generate polished output instantly and more about whether they can explain the structure of a problem and defend the path they took.
Foundational courses should probably become even more serious, not less. Logic, data structures, algorithms, systems, security thinking, and debugging habits are not outdated pieces of a pre-AI curriculum. They are the things that make people resilient when the environment changes. If the tools become more powerful every year, then the education beneath them should become more deliberate, because students need anchors that survive shifting interfaces.
I also think stronger education would make more room for integration across domains. Students should understand that software touches hardware, networking, operating systems, security, product decisions, and human consequences. That does not mean every course has to become everything at once, but it does mean students should repeatedly be reminded that real technology work is interconnected. The people who understand those intersections will be stronger builders and safer decision-makers.
Finally, stronger education should include moral seriousness about technology itself. AI, automation, surveillance, security, bias, labor, and trust are not side conversations. They are part of the world students are entering. If we teach technical power without teaching reflection, we are only doing half the job.
If I get more concrete, I think a stronger CS curriculum should include at least a few things very intentionally. First, more explicit work on debugging as a discipline rather than an incidental skill. Second, more oral explanation and code defense, where students have to talk through what they built and why. Third, stronger systems and security awareness earlier, so students do not think software exists in isolation. Fourth, assignments that require iteration and visible process rather than one-shot polished submission. Fifth, more room for real-world ambiguity, where problems do not arrive perfectly labeled.
I also think curricula should make students practice moving between abstraction levels. One week a student may be thinking about algorithmic behavior, another week about API design, another about deployment, another about access control or failure recovery. That is not educational clutter. That is closer to reality. A graduate should leave with the sense that computing is a connected landscape, not a set of disconnected classrooms.
Because AI is now part of the environment, curricula should probably include direct instruction on how to use it responsibly. Not a cheerleading module, and not just a prohibition policy. A Stronger Curriculum Needs Better Signals of Real Understanding
A stronger curriculum should make it harder to succeed without understanding.
One thing I keep coming back to is that curricula do not just teach content. They also teach students what counts. If a course rewards polished final output above all else, students learn that appearance matters more than process. If a course includes checkpoints, explanation, debugging, revision, and defense of choices, students learn that understanding matters. That is why I think stronger curricula need stronger signals of real comprehension.
For programming courses, that could mean code reviews, live debugging conversations, design explanations, architecture reflections, and revisions based on feedback. For theory-heavy courses, it could mean more emphasis on reasoning aloud, connecting abstract ideas to practical consequences, and demonstrating transfer across problems rather than repeating memorized patterns. For systems and security courses, it could mean more scenario-based analysis where students have to think about failure, risk, and tradeoffs under constraints.
The point is not to make school harder in a performative way. The point is to make it harder to succeed without understanding. That is a very different goal. A stronger curriculum should not just create more suffering. It should create better evidence of learning.
What Students Can Do Right Now
Students cannot control every part of the educational system, but we can control some of how we respond. One practical response is to use AI in ways that expose understanding rather than replace it. Ask it for alternate explanations after you have tried the problem. Ask it to critique your reasoning instead of giving you the answer first. Ask it to generate test cases you can analyze. Ask it to compare approaches so you still have to decide. The goal is to keep your brain in the loop.
Another response is to build projects that require real decisions. Projects are powerful because they force many forms of understanding to meet. You have to choose tools, structure data, debug failures, make interfaces clearer, think about users, and often explain what you did afterward. That kind of work is harder to fake, and it helps you find the edges of what you actually know. That is part of why I want this site to stay project-first. Real projects expose reality.
Students should also push themselves beyond the narrowest possible lane. Learn enough about systems, security, hardware, networking, and theory to recognize how connected the field really is. You do not need mastery in all directions at once, but you do need respect for breadth. The wider your technical map becomes, the better your judgment tends to get.
Most importantly, students should protect their relationship to struggle. Confusion is not always a sign that you are failing. Often, it is a sign that you are near the point where real understanding is about to form. In a time when tools are always ready to erase that discomfort instantly, choosing to think through problems is itself becoming a professional advantage.
The Kind of Technologist I Want to Become
When I think about the future, I do not just ask what tools I want to know. I ask what kind of person I want to become inside a field that is changing this quickly. I want to become someone who can build real things well, not just talk about building them. I want to become someone who can explain difficult ideas clearly, especially to people who are not already insiders. I want to become someone who can think broadly enough to understand the connections between software, systems, security, and human consequences.
I also want to become someone who can hold complexity without collapsing into slogans. AI is not going away. The need for judgment is not going away either. We do not need to become anti-tool. We do not need to become anti-progress. But we do need to become more demanding about what counts as understanding. We need to care about the habits that survive changing platforms. We need to care about the people we are becoming while the tools change around us. We need to care about whether education is still producing thinkers.
